Update.

This is currently being written from the pink hole of a room that I live in. Yes, I said it. HOLE.

Okay.

If you didn't know, I saw a couple movies last week: thought I might give my opinions. Cos I have nothing better to update about.

First of all, ONCE.
The concept of a "modern-day musical" is a great idea. My first thoughts on this: how do you create a musical that fits the culture that we live in? Well, my only answer were to be that you somehow create a story in which you can insert the characters singing and playing music without it being random outbursts of song. With that, you have to create the story around an interesting enough setting so that the songs can be played in different places, and not just the same scene redundantly.
The problem: Even if the music is terrific, you cannot forget the story. If the story isn't fully molded, the rest falls apart. That's what happened in Once. The plot become utterly boring and did not tie-off loose ends completely (many things that happened you had to assume, which for a musical should not be happening!) and I just did not care anymore. It was far too whimsical in nature, even for a musical. Even Rent fully explains the character motives!
Honestly, I won't lie... I wanted the hour and twenty minutes of my life back after I watched this.
Grade: C-
(Great music but poorly situated in a dull story.)

There Will Be Blood
The acting was phenomenal. The soundtrack, amazing. The filming and art direction: great. The story: decent. The continuity of plot and flow of the entire film: not so much. I loved everything about this movie except that it felt rushed and forced. There was not enough build toward the end. All you can say is "hmph" at the end of it. When I say that I loved everything about it, I mean that, but it just felt disappointing in the narrative. I can't explain it any other way than that. So disappointingly, I have to give it a B-.
